چکیده

We present experimental evidence that, in the hard turbulence regime of Rayleigh-Bénard convection, the temperature fluctuations are produced by buoyancy, despite the presence of a mean horizontal flow at the plates. In a convection cell of aspect ratio 1, we measure the temperature time derivative for Ra from 2310 to 1310, which is skewed toward the negative in the region outside the cold thermal boundary layer. This skewness of the derivative indicates the presence of thermal fronts, or plumes, which are detached from the boundary layer by buoyancy. At higher Ra, the skewness of the derivative is reduced, which we relate to the transition to a turbulent Reynolds number in the velocity boundary layer at Ra;10. We define a time scale using the derivative to characterize these fronts, and find that its minimum value scales as Ra over the entire range of Ra in our experiment. @S1063-651X~96!11405-7#

Plume statistics in thermal turbulence: mixing of an active scalar.

Statistical properties of the temperature field in turbulent convection are studied experimentally. We show that the skewness of the plus and minus temperature increments can be used to quantitatively characterize the mixing zone in the convective flow and the result reveals how the mixing zone evolves with the Rayleigh number. We also present evidence for the saturation of the temperature stru...

Thermal plume turbulence

A two-dimensional Boussinesq model of thermal convection is investigated by numerical simulations. The turbulent heat transport is mainly due to thermal plumes. It is shown that their thin, wrinkled interfaces control the statistics of large temperature excursions. Away from the interfaces, the temperature fluctuations are strongly suppressed and the field in those regions is well mixed. Their ...

Extraction of plumes in turbulent thermal convection.

We present a scheme to extract the velocity of buoyant structures in turbulent thermal convection from simultaneous local velocity and temperature measurements. Applying this scheme to measurements taken at positions within the convection cell where the buoyant structures are dominated by plumes, we obtain the temperature dependence of the plume velocity and understand our results using the equ...

Effect of Thermal Conductivity and Emissivity of Solid Walls on Time-Dependent Turbulent Conjugate Convective-Radiative Heat Transfer

In the present study, the conjugate turbulent free convection with the thermal surface radiation in a rectangular enclosure bounded by walls with different thermophysical characteristics in the presence of a local heater is numerically studied. The effects of surface emissivity and wall materials on the air flow and the heat transfer characteristics are the main focus of the present investigati...

Effects of the rectangular groove dimensions on the thermal features of the turbulent Al2O3-water nanofluid flow in the grooved tubes

The forced convection heat transfer of turbulent Al2O3-water nanofluid flow inside the grooved tubeswith the different aspect ratio of the rectangular grooves is numerically investigated. The governingequations have been solved using finite volume method (FVM) coupled with SIMPLE algorithm. It isassumed the heat flux is constant on the grooved walls. The Single-phase approach is applied for th...
